Life on Mars – building an Agile CRM for the QRA

The Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) manages council grants for disaster-related repairs throughout Queensland. With complex evaluation and assessment processes, and over 50 internal assessors and external users from every council in Queensland, QRA's badly outdated systems needed replacing to keep up with their business needs.

April9 was contracted to deliver a modern, robust CRM – the Monitoring and Reporting System (MaRS) was born.

The solution needed to accommodate for QRA’s complex business processes which involves assessing case-specific evidence in relation to disaster sites, to ensure that funding is being properly allocated and that repairs being made are ’value for money’.

As an agile collaboration and a project with tight deadlines, April9's software developers were deployed seamlessly within QRA's own IT department as part of our ICT Staff Augmentation Services. The resources we provided included a Senior Javascript Developer to lead the front-end development, a Scrum Master to drive the project sprints and also impart knowledge around Agile project methodology to QRA's team, and a senior resource with expertise in DevOps and Continuous Deployment to automate the project’s build and deployment pipeline.

When the project prioritised the integration of ArcGIS with the Javascript front-end, April9 was able to provide an additional GIS Specialist resource to facilitate this. The April9 Senior Developer and GIS Specialist were able to tightly integrate the web-based excel-like grid with an embedded map provide advanced geospatial analysis, making MaRS a truly modern reporting and analysis tool.

With regular stakeholder meetings and target/business requirement reviews, driven by April9's Scrum Master, the system was successfully delivered on time and within budget.

QRA estimates that the Monitoring and Reporting System (MaRS) multiplied their assessors' productivity tenfold once go-live was achieved – and is still used to this day.
