10 Most Common UX Design Mistakes

If you are running a business with a presence in the digital space, you should know how important UX is to the success of your venture. UX fulfills the needs of your users. When you provide meaningful user experience, you will be able to define customer journeys on your site, giving you rich insights to improve your product or service continually. UX provides positive experiences to your customers so they’ll become loyal to your brand, and they can even become ambassadors.

With this much at stake, every detail counts. You’ll need to maximise the benefits you can get from UX, and we’re here to help you do that.

If you want to leverage a kick-ass UX design for your business, be sure to look out for these common mistakes:

1: You are neglecting mobile.

People are using their mobile phones more than their laptops or desktop computers, and businesses should use this to their advantage. Websites need to be designed on responsive frameworks, and your design should be adjusted for different screen sizes. This is one step most businesses fail to do. Even though their website functions on mobile, the type size may be too small, and the images are not sized proportionately. These minute details are crucial for the customer’s UX.

To avoid this, make sure you allot time in checking your mobile design. Or better yet, work with a "Mobile-First" design methodology (keep an eye on our blog, new article on this subject coming soon!) List down all of the details that may seem out of place. Look into images, load times, text sizes, button placements, and make sure you fix them for smooth user experience.

2: Your website has poor alignment.

Whether it’s left, right, or justified, it doesn’t matter. What matters is that it’s consistent. There is no “best” alignment, it all depends on the overall design of your website, but the general rule is to make sure that you have a consistent alignment. Your type and elements should be within a grid and always aim for straight edges.

Poor alignments will disrupt the visual flow of your site, and it makes it hard for your end-users to explore the pages from one element to the other. With a messy alignment, they might miss the essential content. To fix this, make sure you set alignment styles for your elements. You should create a guideline and adjust your design to follow the rules you’ve set.

3: You have inappropriate imagery.

This is common sense, but you’ll be surprised by how many websites fail to connect their images to their text. Don't be one of these guys! Inappropriate imagery can kill your content. When you have a disjoint on your visuals and your text, it will confuse your end-users, and that hinders them from continuing to explore your website.

Furthermore, if you’re using stock images, make sure they look realistic and most of all, if you’ve already seen them on a similar website, it is best to avoid them. Your photos should also be of the highest quality. Make sure they're not out of focus, badly lit, or poorly composed. Pixelated images are a big no, and instantly undermine your credibility.

Your website needs photos, but don’t just place them everywhere just because you can. When the photo has no connection with your content, let it go. The images on your website should enhance your content.

4: Your website lacks a call to action.

No matter how aesthetically pleasing your webpage is, if the customer doesn’t know what to do next, you’ll lose them in seconds. As soon as they land on your page they should know out if they're supposed to scroll, click, or swipe for more content. Whatever you want them to do = there should be a call to action; otherwise, they’ll be lost.

A mark of good website design is the presence of actions, movements, and interactions with a seamless flow from one page to another. Your end goal should be to connect your customers to as much content as possible towards a path to the desired action. Whether it’s to fill out a form, buy a product, or click a button, your users should know what the goal of every page is. Make use of bold interface elements to encourage clicks.
